PALM CITY, Fla. -- The Samford men's golf team finished very strong in its first tournament of the spring season, finishing sixth at the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate on Tuesday. The Bulldogs finished with a three day team total of eleven over 875 (294-288-293) in a field of 13 teams.
The highlight of the tournament for the Bulldogs was Senior Aaron Walker, who finished the tournament in third place individually after posting a seven under 209 (71-71-67). In his final round, Walker had a great back nine that featured birdies on the par three 11th, the par four 15th, the par four 16th, and the par five 17th. After the round he credited his putting to this week's success,
"Throughout the tournament I was able to strike the ball well and give myself a lot of good looks for birdie," Walker said. "I was putting well and was able to capitalize on my good approach shots."
Harlan Winn also had an impressive finish as he placed in a tie for 14th individually after shooting an even par 216 (72-71-73).
The team's sixth place finish marks the second straight top ten placement for the Bulldogs after they placed fourth in the Autotrader Collegiate Classic back in October. Aaron Walker stressed the importance of the high momentum that the team is gaining from their recent strong finishes,
"We ended the season in the fall well and that kept the energy high over off season so it was really great to continue playing well," Walker said. "And to shoot five under on the final day and give myself a chance to win the tournament was a great confidence boost."
