BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In a game that saw the two teams combine for eight home runs, the Samford baseball team picked up a 10-7 victory over Xavier in the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford improves to 2-2 on the young season. Xavier falls to 0-4 with the loss.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Anthony Mulrine went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Brooks Carlson went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBI.
- Jordan Fucci also had two hits and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs.
- Samuel Strickland (1-1) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out four batters to earn the win on the mound for the Bulldogs.
- Stephen Jones tossed the final inning to pick up his first save of the season.
- For Xavier, Matt Warkentin went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI.
- Jake Shepski, Conor Grammes and Natale Monastra also had a home run each for the Musketeers.
- Grammes (0-2) was also the starting pitcher for Xavier, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing 10 runs on seven hits to take the loss.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Xavier got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning when Warkentin homered to right field for a 1-0 Xavier lead.
- Samford came back with seven runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by home runs by Mulrine and Carlson.
- In the top of the third inning, Xavier used back-to-back homers by Shepski and Grammes to cut the Samford lead to 7-3.
- The Bulldogs added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mulrine hit his second homer of the game, this one a three-run shot to stretch Samford's lead to 10-3.
- Xavier plated four final runs in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 10-7. Warkentin hit his second home run of the game, this one a three-run bomb. Monastra also hit a solo shot in the inning.
