BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team dropped a 7-1 decision to Xavier in the second game of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the loss, Samford falls to 2-3 on the young season. Xavier improves to 1-4 with the win.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- For Samford in the loss, Brooks Carlson went 3-for-5 at the plate.
- Jordan Fucci went 2-for-5 with a home run and one RBI.
- Jesse McCord (0-1) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
- Ryan Altenberger went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead Xavier in the win.
- Jack Housinger was 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Musketeers.
- Nick Zwack (1-0) tossed 5.1 innings, allowing one run on six hits to earn the win for Xavier.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Xavier jumped on top first with two runs in the top of the second inning.
- The Musketeers then added a run each in the third, fourth and fifth innings to push their lead to 5-0.
- Samford got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out in the inning, Fucci homered to right-center field to cut the Xavier lead to 5-1.
- Xavier added a run in the seventh inning and another in the eighth to make the final score 7-1.
