BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford's
Max Pinto scored on a sacrifice fly by
Anthony Mulrine in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Bulldog baseball team to a 10-9 win over Xavier in the final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the victory, Samford wins the series over Xavier, two games to one. Samford's season record improves to 3-3. Xavier's record drops to 1-5 with the loss.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Pinto went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Jordan Fucci went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
- Taylor Garris and Preston Moore each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Stephen Jones (1-0) pitched the final 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on four hits to pick up the win for Samford.
- For Xavier, Matt Warkentin and Natale Monastra each homered in the game.
- Trey Schramm (0-1) pitched 2.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs on four hits to take the loss for the Musketeers.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Xavier plated three runs in the top of the second inning and one more run in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
- Samford came back to tie the score with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. The majority of the damage came on Fucci's three-run homer to center field to knot the score at 4-4.
- Xavier took the lead back with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, giving the Musketeers a 6-4 lead.
- Samford took the lead for the first time with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pinto hit a three-run homer, and Taylor Garris and Moore drove in a run each as Samford took a 9-6 lead.
- Xavier came back with three runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the score at 9-9. Workentin hit a three-run home run to left field to draw the Musketeers even with the Bulldogs.
- In the bottom of the ninth inning, Pinto walked and Branden Fryman reached on an infield single to start the rally. Fucci was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.
- With one out in the inning, Mulrine hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in Pinto for the game-winning run, giving Samford the 10-9 victory.

Samford will play at Alabama State on Tuesday, Feb. 26. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start from Montgomery, Ala.
