MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Samford baseball team jumped on top early and never looked back on its way to a 10-5 win at Alabama State Tuesday night at ASU's Wheeler-Watkins Stadium.
With the win, Samford improves to 4-3 on the young season. Alabama State falls to 5-2 with the loss.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Anthony Mulrine went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Brooks Carlson also drove in three runs for Samford, while Jordan Fucci drove in two.
- Branden Fryman went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
- Jalon Long (1-0) pitched 1.2 innings in relief, giving up no runs on two hits to earn the win. He was one of seven pitchers used by Samford in the win.
- Noel Cheneau went 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead Alabama State offensively.
- Ricardo Rivera (0-1) tossed 2.0 innings, giving up four runs on five hits to take the loss on the mound for the Hornets.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford jumped on top early with a run in the top of the first inning. Carlson singled up the middle to drive in Fryman and give Samford a 1-0 lead.
- The Bulldogs added two runs in the top of the second inning to push their lead to 3-0. Fucci singled to drive in Preston Moore for the first run of the inning. Carlson then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Max Pinto for a three-run Samford lead.
- Samford plated a run in the third inning and two more in the sixth to make the score 6-0.
- In the top of the seventh inning, Samford added three more runs on a three-run home run by Mulrine to increase the Bulldogs' lead to 9-0.
- In the bottom of the seventh inning, Alabama State got on the scoreboard with one run to cut the Samford lead to 9-1.
- Samford scored another run in the top of the eighth when Taylor Garris scored when Fryman reached base on a fielder's choice to make the score 10-1.
- The Hornets added four final runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final score 10-5.
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will travel to Atlanta to take on the Georgia State Panthers in a three-game series this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 3 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).
