Men's Basketball Picks Up 84-77 OT Win At VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. –
The Samford men's basketball team picked up an 84-77 overtime win at VMI Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 15-11 overall and 5-8 in Southern Conference play. VMI falls to 7-17 overall and 1-11 in league contests.
 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Samford was led in the game by Ruben Guerrero with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Brandon Austin also scored 19 points and pulled down seven boards for the Bulldogs.
  • Josh Sharkey tallied 15 points and nine assists.
  • VMI was led by Bubba Parham and Jake Stephens with 15 points each.
  • Garrett Gilkeson had 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Keydets.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • VMI jumped out to an early 10-2 lead with 16:56 to go in the first half.
  • With Samford trailing, 13-5, the Bulldogs went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to one at 15-14 with 12:11 to go in the first half after a three-pointer by Austin.
  • Samford took a 22-19 lead with 8:58 to go in the first half after a jumper by Robert Allen.
  • VMI responded with three-straight three-pointers to take a 28-22 lead with 6:47 left in the opening half.
  • The Keydets pushed their lead to nine at 33-24 with 5:10 left in the first half.
  • Samford fought back to cut the lead to three at 34-31, and the Bulldogs trailed 37-33 heading into the locker room at halftime.
  • In the second half, with Samford trailing, 43-40, VMI went on a 10-0 run to push the lead to 13 points at 53-40 with 13:05 to go.
  • Samford cut the lead to six at 59-53, but VMI scored the next eight points to push the lead to 67-53 with 6:32 left in regulation.
  • Samford fought its way back into the game, cutting the lead to two points at 70-68 with less than a minute to play.
  • Austin hit a jumper with 13 seconds left to knot the score at 70-70, and the teams headed to overtime.
  • Samford opened the overtime with a 9-2 run to take a 79-72 lead with 2:52 left after a layup by Guerrero.
  • VMI scored the next five points to cut the lead to two at 79-77 with 1:45 left in the overtime.
  • Samford, however, scored the final five points of the game to come away with the 84-77 overtime victory.

  • Samford will return home to play host to Chattanooga next Saturday, Feb. 16. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
