Women's Basketball Falls To Mercer, 68-52

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford women's basketball team dropped a 68-52 decision at home to Southern Conference-leading Mercer Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 7-16 overall and 2-6 in Southern Conference play. Mercer improves to 16-7 overall and 8-0 in league contests.

  • Cassidy Williams led Samford with nine points.
  • Paige Serup added eight points for the Bulldogs.
  • Mercer was led by KeKe Calloway with 22 points.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Samford grabbed an early 6-5 lead with 5:54 to go in the first quarter after a jumper by Ta'Naisha Hill.
  • Mercer, however scored eight of the final 11 points in the quarter to hold a 13-9 lead at the end of the first period.
  • Samford scored the first five points of the second quarter to take a 14-13 lead with 8:46 left in the second quarter after a three-pointer by Samantha Fitzgerald.
  • Mercer then took control of the game, stretching its lead out to 33-19 with 2:08 left in the second quarter.
  • Mercer took a 37-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Mercer pushed its lead out to 17 points at 43-26 with 6:43 to go in the third quarter.
  • Samford cut the lead to 11 points at 45-34, but Mercer answered with a 12-4 run to push its lead to 19 points at 57-38 at the end of the third quarter.
  • In the fourth quarter, Mercer increased its lead to 20 points at 64-44 with 5:39 to go in the game.
  • Mercer finished the game with the 68-52 victory.
