BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team opened its weekend series with Maine with a 5-2 win Friday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford improves to 13-4 on the season. Maine falls to 0-14 with the loss.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Anthony Mulrine homered and drove in two runs to lead Samford in the win.
- Brooks Carlson went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run.
- Jordan Fucci, Taylor Garris and Max Pinto drove in a run each for the Bulldogs.
- Samuel Strickland (3-1) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on seven hits, and striking out four batters without allowing a walk to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
- Stephen Jones picked up his Southern Conference leading seventh save, tossing the final inning without allowing a hit.
- For Maine, Hernen Sardinas went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Colin Ridley went 2-for-4.
- Nick Silva (0-3) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits to take the loss for the Black Bears.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Pinto singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Garris for a 1-0 Samford lead.
- The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the third inning to push their lead to 2-0. With the bases loaded, Garris singled to drive in Mulrine for a two-run Samford lead.
- Samford plated three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The first run scored when Pinto scored on a sacrifice fly by Fucci. Mulrine then hit a two-run home run to give Samford a 5-0 lead.
- Maine plated a run in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to make the final score 5-2.
