Baseball Drops Game Two To Maine, 6-4

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford baseball team dropped the second game of its three-game series with Maine, 6-4, Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 13-5 on the season. Maine improves to 1-14 with the win.


 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Sonny DiChiara led Samford at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
  • Preston Moore and Max Pinto drove in a run each for the Bulldogs.
  • Jack Rude (0-1), one of eight pitchers used by Samford, pitched a third of an inning, giving up three runs on one hit to take the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.
  • Denny Casals homered and drove in one run in a 1-for-3 performance for Maine.
  • Joe Bramanti and Cody Pasic had two hits and an RBI each for the Black Bears.
  • Peter Kemble (1-3) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on three hits to earn the win for Maine.
  • Trevor DeLaite picked up his first save of the season, tossing the final 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Maine got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the first inning. Casals hit a solo home run to left-center to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead.
  • Samford came back to take a 2-1 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. DiChiara homered to left field with Anthony Mulrine on base to give Samford the lead.
  • The Black Bears answered with four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Bramanti, Colin Ridley and Pasic drove in a run each, while Ridley scored on a balk in the inning.
  • Maine added a run in the top of the eighth inning to push its lead to 6-2. Brogan Searle-Belan doubled to drive in Pasic for a four-run Maine lead.
  • Samford came back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 6-4. Mulrine scored the first run when Moore grounded out to third base. Pinto later singled to drive in DiChiara for the game's final run.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford and Maine will conclude their series with a game Sunday. The contest is set for a 1 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
