Baseball Drops Hard-Fought Game To No. 2 Mississippi State, 6-4

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford baseball team jumped out to an early lead, but could not hold on as second-ranked Mississippi State came back to take a 6-4 win over Samford Wednesday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
The game was played in front of a crowd of 2,284 fans, the second-largest crowd in stadium history. With the loss, Samford falls to 14-6 on the season. Mississippi State improves to 20-2 with the win.


 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Jordan Fucci led Samford at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
  • Anthony Mulrine went 2-for-5 for Samford, while Max Pinto and Connor Burns drove in a run each.
  • Jack Rude (0-2), one of six pitchers used by Samford, took the loss. He tossed 2.1 innings in relief, giving up four unearned runs on four hits.
  • Jake Mangum and Justin Foscue each went 3-for-5 with an RBI to lead Mississippi State offensively.
  • Rowdey Jordan went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Landon Jordan drove in two runs in a 1-for-5 performance.
  • Tyler Spring (1-0), one of six pitchers used by MSU, earned the win, tossing 2.0 innings, allowing no runs on one hit.
  • Cole Gordon picked up his sixth save of the season, pitching the final hitless inning for Mississippi State.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford jumped on top with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Fucci hit a two-run home run to left-center field for the first two runs of the game. Pinto and Burns drove in a run each later in the inning to give Samford an early 4-0 lead.
  • Mississippi State plated a run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-2.
  • MSU took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 6-4. Landon Jordan, Rowdey Jordan, Mangum and Jordan Westburg drove in a run each in the decisive inning for MSU.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will open Southern Conference play with a three-game series versus Furman this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
