BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team scored 14 runs on 15 hits to take a 14-4 win in game two of its Southern Conference series with Furman Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford secures the series win over the Paladins. Samford has a record of 16-6 overall and 2-0 in Southern Conference play. Furman falls to 5-15 overall and 0-2 in league contests. The 14 runs scored by Samford are the most the Bulldogs have scored in a game so far this season.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Sonny DiChiara went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI to lead Samford in the win.
- Branden Fryman also homered for Samford, going 1-for-4 with two RBI.
- Jordan Fucci went 4-for-5 with four runs scored.
- Taylor Garris went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.
- Jesse McCord (2-1) pitched 7.0 innings, allowing four runs, just one earned, on three hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
- Jabari Richards led Furman, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Sterling Turmon homered and drove in two runs for the Paladins, while Jared Mihalik hit a solo home run in a 1-for-3 performance.
- Rob Hughes (2-1) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up 10 runs on nine hits to take the loss for the Paladins.
SCORING SUMMARY
- After Furman scored three runs in the top of the first inning, Samford responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. DiChiara did the majority of the damage in the inning with his three-run homer as Samford took a 5-3 lead.
- Samford added three runs in the second inning, three more in the third and one in the fourth to push its lead to 12-3. In the third inning, Fryman hit a two-run home run to left field for the Bulldogs.
- After Furman plated a run in the top of the fifth inning, Samford added two final runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The final run was scored on DiChiara's solo home run, his second homer of the game to make the final score 14-4.
