LEXINGTON, Va. – The Samford baseball team opened its Southern Conference series at VMI with a 13-4 win Friday evening at Gray-Minor Stadium.
With the win, Samford improves to 18-7 overall and 4-0 in Southern Conference play. VMI falls to 5-21 overall and 1-3 in league contests.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Jordan Fucci drove in four runs on a grand slam to lead Samford at the plate.
- Connor Burns hit a three-run home run, and Sonny DiChiara hit a two-run shot for the Bulldogs.
- Max Pinto went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for Samford.
- Samuel Strickland (5-1) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out seven batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
- For VMI, Ryan Hatten and Cody Warner had a pair of two-run home runs.
- Jacob Menders (2-2) tossed 4.0 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits to take the loss for the Keydets.
SCORING SUMMARY
- VMI jumped on top first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Hatten hit a two-run home run to left field for a 2-0 Keydet lead.
- Samford answered with seven runs in the top of the fourth inning. Fucci hit a grand slam to left-center field, and Burns hit a three-run shot down the left-field line for a 7-2 Samford lead.
- In the top of the sixth inning, Samford's DiChiara hit a two-run home run to left-center field, giving Samford a 9-2 advantage.
- Samford added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to push its lead to 11-2. Pinto tripled to drive in Taylor Garris for the inning's first run. Pinto later scored from third base when Branden Fryman reached base on a fielder's choice.
- The Bulldogs plated two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to make the score 13-2. Brooks Carlson scored the first run when Preston Moore was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Sam Teague then walked, driving home Anthony Mulrine for an 11-run Samford lead.
- VMI added two final runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Warner hit a two-run home run to make the final score 13-4.
