BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team dropped a 6-4 decision to Furman in the final game of a three-game series at the Samford Softball Stadium Sunday.

With the loss, Samford falls to 15-23 overall and 4-2 in Southern Conference play. Furman improves to 10-22 overall and 2-4 in league games. Samford wins the series from Furman, two games to one.

FROM THE BOX SCORE

Timberlyn Shurbutt went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI for Samford.
Whitney Hinton also homered for Samford, going 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Hannah Trombley went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Madison Couch also had two hits for Samford.
Annalyn Yantis (3-6) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on five hits to take the loss for Samford.
Marissa Guimbarda went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead Furman at the plate.
Natalie Morgan also homered for the Paladins, going 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Mackensie Greico (2-9) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits to earn the win in the circle for the Paladins.

SCORING SUMMARY

After Furman jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Samford came back to tie the score at 1-1 when Shurbutt scored on a sacrifice fly by Trombley.
Furman added four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. Morgan hit a solo home run, and Guimbarda hit a three-run shot for a four-run Furman lead.
Samford answered with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 5-3. Shurbutt homered to left field for the first run of the inning. Trombley later singled to drive in Hinton to bring Samford to within two runs.
In the top of the fifth inning, Guimbarda homered to right-center field to push the Paladins' lead to 6-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Hinton hit a home run to left field to cut the Furman lead to 6-4.

LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will host Belmont in a midweek game Wednesday. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start from the Samford Softball Stadium.
