Baseball Wins Ninth-Straight, 3-2, Over Kennesaw State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford baseball team used a three-run first inning and a strong pitching performance to earn its ninth-straight win, 3-2, over Kennesaw State Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 11-3 on the season. Kennesaw State falls to 6-8 with the loss. The victory, paired with Friday night's win, assures Samford of the series win in the three-game set.
 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Branden Fryman went 2-for-4 with a double to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Brooks Carlson, Sonny DiChiara and Taylor Garris drove in a run each for the Bulldogs.
  • Jesse McCord (1-1) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits to earn the win for Samford.
  • Stephen Jones picked up his sixth save of the season, tossing the final inning, allowing just one hit.
  • Kennesaw State was led by Jake Franklin, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Tyler Simon and Tyler Tolve drove in a run apiece for the Owls.
  • Ryan Kennedy (2-1) pitched 4.2 innings, surrendering three runs on six hits to take the loss for KSU.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford plated all three of its runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Carlson singled to drive in Fryman for the game's first run. Jordan Fucci then scored on a sacrifice fly by DiChiara for a 2-0 Samford lead. Garris then singled to drive in Carlson to make the score 3-0.
  • Kennesaw State plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Samford lead to 3-2. Tolve singled to drive in Alex Carballo for the first run of the inning. Simon then doubled to drive in Tolve for the game's final run.
