Baseball Downs The Citadel, 10-3 To Complete Series Sweep

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford baseball team completed its three-game Southern Conference series sweep of The Citadel with a commanding 10-3 win Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 25-11 overall and 8-1 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel falls to 10-25 overall and 3-9 in league play.
 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Brooks Carlson went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Branden Fryman went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored.
  • Anthony Mulrine homered and drove in one run in a 1-for-5 performance.
  • Zach Hester (4-3) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up no runs on just two hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
  • Wes Lane went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead The Citadel at the plate.
  • Dylan Spence (2-6) pitched 1.2 innings, giving up five runs on six hits to take the loss for The Citadel.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford scored five runs in the second inning to take an early 5-0 lead. Mulrine hit a solo home run, Jordan Fucci drove in two runs, and Fryman and Max Pinto drove in one run each as the Bulldogs grabbed a five-run lead.
  • Samford added three runs in the third inning to push its lead to 8-0. Carlson and Kaden Dreier drove in one run each, and Taylor Garris scored on an error.
  • Samford plated a run in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to make the score 10-0. In the fifth inning, Carlson singled to drive in Fryman. In the sixth inning, Garris scored on a sacrifice fly by Fryman.
  • The Citadel plated two runs in the seventh inning and one in the eighth inning to make the final score 10-3.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will play at in-state rival Troy Tuesday evening. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start from Troy's Riddle-Pace Field.
