TROY, Ala. – The Samford baseball team scored 15 runs on 16 hits on its way to a 15-5 win at in-state rival Troy Tuesday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
With the win, Samford improves to 26-11 on the season. Troy falls to 19-18 with the loss.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Branden Fryman went 3-for-4 with two home runs, two RBI and four runs scored to lead Samford in the win.
- Brooks Carlson went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI for the Bulldogs.
- Sonny DiChiara, Anthony Mulrine, Ayrton Schafer and Taylor Garris drove in two runs each for Samford.
- Jalon Long (2-1) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up four runs, just one earned, on three hits and striking out six batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
- For Troy, Austin Garofalo, Dalton Sinquefield and Sadler Goodwin drove in a run each in the game.
- Max Newton (1-4) pitched 2.1 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits to take the loss on the mound for the Trojans.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford jumped out to an early lead as Fryman hit a solo home run to left field on the first pitch of the game, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
- Troy came back with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 lead.
- Samford came back with five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 6-3 lead. Carlson doubled to drive in Fryman for the first run of the inning. DiChiara then singled to drive in Carlson to knot the score. Mulrine then doubled to drive in Jordan Fucci and DiChiara to give Samford the 5-3 lead. Mulrine scored on the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Garris to give Samford the three-run lead.
- Troy plated a run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Samford lead to 6-4.
- Samford added four runs in the top of the fourth inning to push its lead to 10-4. Schafer drove in two runs, and Carlson and DiChiara drove in one run each as Samford took a six-run lead.
- The Bulldogs plated a run in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to make the score 12-4. In the fifth inning, Fryman hit his second homer of the game. In the sixth inning, Mulrine scored on a sacrifice fly by Garris for an eight-run Samford lead.
- Samford scored two more runs in the seventh inning and one in the ninth to push its lead to 15-4. In the seventh inning, Carlson hit a two-run home run. In the ninth inning, Connor Burns walked with the bases loaded.
- Troy scored one final run in the bottom of the ninth inning to make the final score 15-5.
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will play host to UNCG in a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams are scheduled to play Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
