BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team opened its series with UNCG with a 7-3 victory Thursday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford improves to 27-11 overall and 9-1 in Southern Conference play. UNCG falls to 22-13 overall and 5-5 in league games.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Jordan Fucci hit a home run and drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance at the plate.
- Ayrton Schafer also drove in two runs, going 1-for-3 for the Bulldogs.
- Samuel Strickland (6-1) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
- Caleb Webster and Zach Kuchmaner each homered and drove in one run for UNCG.
- Phillip Sanderson (4-3) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up seven runs on six hits to take the loss for the Spartans.
SCORING SUMMARY
- After UNCG plated a run in the top of the first inning, Samford came back with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Schafer drove in two runs, while Fucci, Taylor Garris and Preston Moore drove in a run each as Samford took a 5-1 lead.
- UNCG plated another run in the top of the second inning to cut the lead to 5-2.
- Samford came back with another run in the bottom of the second when Sonny DiChiara singled to drive in Brooks Carlson, giving Samford a 6-2 lead.
- Fucci hit a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning, pushing Samford's lead to 7-2.
- UNCG plated one final run in the top of the sixth inning to make the final score 7-3.
