BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team swept its Southern Conference doubleheader from UNCG Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Bulldogs won the first game, 3-2 in 10 innings, and then claimed game two by a score of 14-0 in seven innings.
With the wins, Samford earns the series sweep of the Spartans. Samford improves to 29-11 overall and 11-1 in Southern Conference play. UNCG falls to 22-15 overall and 5-7 in league games.
GAME 1: SAMFORD 3, UNCG 2 (10 INN.)
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Brooks Carlson went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI to lead Samford in game one.
- Branden Fryman went 2-for-5, including the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 10th inning.
- Stephen Jones (2-0) pitched 2.0 innings in relief, giving up one run on four hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
- For UNCG, Zach Kuchmaner went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
- Austin Embler also drove in a run for the Spartans.
- Chad Sykes (4-3) pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits to take the loss on the mound for the Spartans.
SCORING SUMMARY
- UNCG took the first lead of the game, plating a run in the top of the third inning for a 1-0 lead.
- Samford tied the game at 1-1 on Carlson's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

- In game two for Samford, Sonny DiChiara homered and drove in three runs.
- Pinto also homered for the Bulldogs, driving in three runs.
- Schafer and Kaden Dreier drove in two runs each for Samford.
- Zach Hester (5-3) pitched the complete 7.0 innings, giving up no runs on two hits, recording seven strikeouts without allowing a walk.
- For UNCG in game two, Embler and David Flores had one hit each.
- Austin Parsley (2-1) pitched 1.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits to take the loss on the mound for the Spartans.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford scored one run in the first inning, two runs in the second inning and one more in the third to take an early 4-0 lead.
- The Bulldogs broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning to push their lead to 9-0. Pinto hit a two-run home run, Schafer drove in two run and Dreier drove in one as Samford stretched its lead to nine runs.
- In the fifth inning, Samford added five more runs to make the final score 14-0. DiChiara hit a two-run homer, while Anthony Mulrine, Dreier and Pinto drove in a run each in the inning for Samford.
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will host a pair of midweek games against in-state foes this week. The Bulldogs will host Alabama A&M Tuesday night at 6 p.m., and then host Troy Wednesday evening at 6 p.m., both at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
