SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford baseball team ran its current win streak to 10 games with an 11-4 win at Wofford in the first game of a three-game Southern Conference series Friday night at Russell C. King Field.
With the win, Samford improves to 32-11 overall and 12-1 in Southern Conference games. This marks the second 10-game win streak of the season for Samford. The 12-1 league record marks the best start to SoCon play for Samford since joining the league for the 2009 season. Wofford falls to 25-18 overall and 7-5 in SoCon play.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Sonny DiChiara went 2-for-6 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and a career-high six RBI to lead Samford in the win. This marks DiChiara's fourth two-homer game of the season.
- Jordan Fucci also homered for Samford, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
- Ayrton Schafer and Max Pinto drove in two runs each for Samford.
- Carson Cupo (4-0) earned the win on the mound for Samford, pitching 4.1 innings in relief, giving up no runs on four hits.
- For Wofford, Hudson Byorick went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
- Reed Massey went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Terriers.
- Austin Higginbotham (8-3) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up nine runs on seven hits to take the loss for Wofford.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. DiChiara hit a two-run home run, and Fucci hit a solo homer to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.
- Wofford plated a run in the bottom of the first inning to cut the lead to 3-1.
- In the top of the second inning, DiChiara hit a grand slam to left field to push Samford's lead to 7-1.
- The Terriers came back with another run in the bottom of the second inning, making the score 7-2.
