BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team built an early lead on its way to a 9-1 win over North Alabama Wednesday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford improves to 20-9 with the win. North Alabama falls to 6-22 with the loss.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Taylor Garris went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Sonny DiChiara also homered, driving in two runs.
- Branden Fryman went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Connor Radliff (2-0) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up no runs on one hit to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
- Reid Homan led North Alabama at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- Adam Mancour (1-2) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up four runs on three hits to take the loss for UNA.
SCORING SUMMARY
- Samford jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when DiChiara hit a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning.
- Samford added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to push its lead to 4-0. Ayrton Schafer singled to drive in Brooks Carlson for the first run of the inning. Anthony Mulrine then scored on a wild pitch for a four-run Samford lead.
- Samford added a run in the fifth inning, one in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to push its lead to 7-0. In the fifth inning, Fryman scored on a ground out by Jordan Fucci. In the sixth inning, Garris hit a solo home run to left-center field. Max Pinto scored the run in the seventh inning on a ground out by Fucci.
- North Alabama got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the eighth inning. Homan homered to left field to cut the Samford lead to 7-1.
- The Bulldogs added two final runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final score 9-1. Fryman singled to drive in Garris for the first run. The final run was scored when Preston Moore scored on a wild pitch.
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will host UT Martin in a non-conference series this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
