BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team plated nine runs in the fifth inning to pull away on its way to a 14-4 win over UT Martin in the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford improves to 21-9 on the season. UT Martin falls to 11-18 with the loss.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- Sonny DiChiara went 3-for-6 with a home run, a double and four RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Brooks Carlson went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI.
- Anthony Mulrine and Taylor Garris also homered in the win for Samford.
- Gene Hurst (2-2) pitched 2.1 innings in relief, giving up no runs on two hits to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
- For UT Martin, Casey Harford homered and drove in two runs.
- Austen Bullington (2-4) took the loss for the Skyhawks, tossing 4.1 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits.
SCORING SUMMARY
- UT Martin jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the second inning.
- Samford came back with a run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 2-1. Max Pinto singled to drive in Ayrton Schafer for Samford's first run of the game.
- The Skyhawks added two runs in the third inning to push its lead to 4-1.
- Samford took control of the game with nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. DiChiara, Mulrine and Garris hit a two-run home run each in the inning. Carlson later drove in a run with a double, and then DiChiara added a two-run single as Samford took a 10-4 lead.
- In the bottom of the sixth inning, Samford added two more runs to push its lead to 12-4. Preston Moore singled to drive in Mulrine for the first run of the inning. Schafer later scored when Pinto reached base on a fielder's choice.
- The Bulldogs scored two final runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the final score 14-4. Carlson doubled to right field to drive in Branden Fryman and Garris for the game's final two runs.
