Baseball Falls In Pitchers Duel To UT Martin, 3-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
A pair of late UT Martin home runs lifted the Skyhawk baseball team to a 3-1 win over Samford in the final game of a three-game non-conference series Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
Samford wins the series, two games to one, after taking the Friday and Saturday contests. Samford falls to 22-10 with the loss. UT Martin improves to 12-19 with the victory.
 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Sonny DiChiara went 2-for-4 with a double to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Anthony Mulrine drove in Samford's lone run, going 1-for-3 in the loss.
  • Zach Hester (3-3) pitched 7.0 strong innings for Samford. He gave up one run on five hits and recorded seven strikeouts without allowing a walk in taking the loss.
  • Blake Davis went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Skyhawks in the win.
  • Creighton Eldridge also homered, going 1-for-3 with one RBI.
  • Winston Cannon (4-5) earned the win on the mound for UT Martin, tossing 7.0 innings, giving up no runs on four hits and striking out nine batters, while not allowing a walk.
  • Nick Wohlbold picked up his seventh save of the season, pitching the final 2.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • The game was scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when Eldridge led the inning off with a home run to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.
  • In the top of the ninth inning, Davis hit a two-run home run to left field to push the UT Martin lead to 3-0.
  • Samford put its lone run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth inning. Brooks Carlson scored from third base on a sacrifice fly by Mulrine to cut the lead to 3-1. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to push another run across.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford will host the Alabama Crimson Tide Tuesday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The game is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
