Samford Travels To Jacksonville State Wednesday

SAMFORD AT JAX STATE GAME NOTES

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford women's basketball team will play at in-state rival Jacksonville State Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. from Pete Matthews Coliseum.

Samford enters the game with a record of 1-5, coming off an 88-54 loss at ninth-ranked Kentucky Sunday afternoon. Jacksonville State is currently 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play after a 68-66 setback at Tennessee Tech Sunday.
 
Samford and Jacksonville State have met 32 previous times, with Samford holding an 18-14 series lead. The programs were co-members of the Atlantic Sun Conference from 1997 to 2003, and the Ohio Valley Conference from 2003 to 2008. The teams last met on Nov. 24, 2015, with Samford earning a 50-39 win at JSU.

ARMSTRONG PICKS UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF: Samford senior center Natalie Armstrong has picked up right where she left off last season. So far this season, Armstrong is averaging 12.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. She had 25 points and 10 rebounds in the season opener at Alabama, and then turned in 10 points and six rebounds at Auburn. She also had 15 points and five rebounds against North Alabama, and produced 10 points at No. 9 Kentucky.
 
COURNOYER BRINGS A SPARK: After missing the first three games of the season with an injury, junior Andrea Cournoyer has provided a needed spark for the Bulldogs in the last three games. The Louisiana transfer is averaging a team-high 17.0 points per game. She led the team with 18 points in her Samford debut against UT Martin. She then had 19 points in a win over North Alabama. Cournoyer led the team with 14 points at No. 9 Kentucky.
 
ARMSTRONG NEARS CAREER MILESTONE: Natalie Armstrong enters this game with 947 career points, leaving her just 53 points shy of becoming just the ninth player in program history to score 1,000 points in their careers. Her 947 career points rank ninth in school history.
 
OMAR LEADING THE SOCON: Entering this game, Samford senior guard Raven Omar is leading the Southern Conference in assists, dishing out 4.5 assists per game. Through the first six games of the season, Omar has had at least five assists in three of those contests. She had five assists against Alabama, a career-high eight assists against Auburn, and eight again versus North Alabama.
 
SAMFORD VERSUS OVC OPPONENTS: Samford has an all-time record of 72-76 against the current members of the Ohio Valley Conference, including an 18-14 mark against Jacksonville State. Samford was a member of the OVC from 2003 until moving to the SoCon in the summer of 2008. Samford's all-time record against each current OVC team follows: Austin Peay (7-3), Belmont (0-8), Eastern Illinois (5-3), Eastern Kentucky (6-6), Jacksonville State (18-14), Morehead State (8-4), Murray State (4-6), Southeast Missouri (4-10), Tennessee State (9-2), Tennessee Tech (6-8) and UT Martin (5-12).
 
SAMFORD AWAY FROM HOME: This season, Samford has 15 games
on its schedule set to be played away from the Pete Hanna Center, and the Bulldogs are currently 0-4 in those contests. Last season, Samford was 12-9 away from the friendly confines of the Pete Hanna Center, including an 8-9 mark in true road games and 4-0 in neutral-site contests.
 
AMONG SOCON LEADERS: Entering this game, Samford is near the top of the Southern Conference in several statistical categoriges. Samford ranks second in the league in both field goal percentage (.411) and three-point field goal percentage (.345). The Bulldogs also rank second in the league in rebounding defense (36.5) and three-pointers made per game (6.8).

record of 61-52 against teams from the state of Alabama, including an 18-14 mark against Jacksonville State.
