NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision at Belmont to open the SAF Dirt Classic Thursday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont scored three runs in the first inning and two more in the second inning to take an early 5-0 lead.
- Samford came back with three runs in the top of the third inning on a two-run single by Sonny DiChiara and an RBI single by Kaden Dreier to cut the lead to 5-3.
- In the top of the fourth inning, Max Pinto tripled to drive in Taylor Garris to close to within one run at 5-4.
- The Bruins added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and two more in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 9-4.
ON THE MOUND
- Jalon Long (0-1) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up seven runs, just five earned, to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
- Aaron Hubbell (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings giving up four runs on six hits to earn the win for the Bruins.
- Kyle Brennan tossed the final 1.1 innings, without allowing a hit to pick up his second save of the season.
NOTABLES
- Pinto went 3-for-5 with a triple and an RBI.
- DiChiara drove in two runs in a 1-for-5 performance at the plate.
