BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University softball team opened the 2020 season with a pair of games at the Samford Softball Tournament. The Bulldogs split the doubleheader taking down Eastern Illinois, then falling to Winthrop in the nightcap on day 1 of the Samford Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Against Eastern Illinois, freshman Abby Swaney earned her first collegiate start and her first collegiate win.
• Junior O'Neil Roberson had a home run against Eastern Illinois that tied the game at three in the bottom of the third. Kolby Holcombe's double in the same inning put the Bulldogs on top 4-3.
• Against Winthrop, Roberson went 2-for-4 with a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning that briefly gave the Bulldogs the lead.

 IN THE CIRCLE

• Swaney (1-0) gave up three runs on four hits in 7.0 innings against Eastern Illinois to give the Bulldogs their first win of the 2020 campaign.
• Megan Robertson (0-1) took the loss against Winthrop with three earned runs on four hits in 4.0 innings pitched.

NOTABLES 

• Roberson's two-home run day, including the first grand slam of the year for the Bulldogs.
• Swaney opened her collegiate career with a win against Eastern Illinois.
