ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The top-seeded Samford women's basketball team opened the Southern Conference Tournament with a 77-62 win over eighth-seeded Western Carolina Thursday morning at Harrah's Cherokee Center.
With the win, Samford improves to 16-14, while Western Carolina falls to 5-25. Samford advances to Friday's semifinal round where the Bulldogs will take on the Furman-Wofford winner.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Western Carolina jumped out to an early 8-4 lead with 7:47 left in the first quarter.
- Samford scored the next five points to take a 9-8 lead at the 6:19 mark of the first period after a three-pointer by Serup.
- With the score tied at 10-10, Samford went on a 13-4 run to take a 23-14 lead with 1:43 left in the quarter after a three-pointer by Myers.
- Western Carolina scored the final five points of the quarter to cut Samford's lead to 23-19 at the end of the period.
- In the second quarter, Samford pushed its lead out to 30-21 with 5:56 to go in the period following a three-pointer by Ta'Naisha Hill.
- Samford built its lead to 19 points in the second quarter at 42-23 with 1:43 left before halftime after another three-pointer by Serup, and the Bulldogs took the same lead into the locker room at halftime.
- The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 25 points at 54-29 with 4:14 left in the third quarter after a layup by Raven Omar.
- Samford took a 56-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
- Western Carolina cut the Samford lead to 18 points at 59-41, but Samford went on a 6-0 run to push its lead back to 24 points at 65-41 with 6:49 left in the game after a three-pointer by Brown.
- WCU could get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way as Samford came away with the 77-62 win.
