BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Bulldog Club held its Seventh Annual Samford Classic fundraiser and golf tournament last Monday, Sept. 27, at Shoal Creek Club.
The Samford Classic raises funds to benefit Samford's more than 390 student-athletes and 17 athletic teams. Over the seven-year history of the event, more than $1.4 million dollars has been raised.
The field for the event is capped at 72 players, and this is the seventh-straight year the tournament has been sold out. This year's tournament raised over $210,000.
"The Samford Classic continues to be one of the premier golf outings and fundraisers in the state," Samford Director of Athletics
Martin Newton said. "This is made possible by the work of our incredible volunteers, staff and the good people at Shoal Creek Country Club. To be able to host the event at such a prestigious venue, the unique format, and the fantastic gifts are the keys to the tournament's success. And of course, a special thank you to all our sponsors and players for their continued support of Samford Athletics."
Samford's new President Dr. Beck A. Taylor addressed the group prior to the start of play, and then participated in the round of golf. Over $72,000 in hole gifts and prizes were awarded at the event.
The winning foursome in the tournament was Mark Woods, James Stewart, Tony Gunter and Maripat Newington. The winner of the putting challenge was Billy Borland.
