BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University men's basketball team opened the 2021-22 season with a 99-78 victory over Maryville College (1-1) on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at the Pete Hanna Center. The Bulldogs (1-0) placed six scorers in double figures led by
Ques Glover with 19 points,
Wesley Cardet, Jr., had 18 and
Cooper Kaifes closed with 17 points. Maryville's Felix Uadaile led all scorers with 24 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Scots raced out to an early 10-1 lead before sophomore guard Cooper Kaifes drained a 23-foot 3-pointer and Jacob Tryon knocked down a jump hook to cut the deficit to four, 10-6, with 15:42 to go in the first half.
- Samford roared back out of the media timeout, outscoring Maryville 15-3 to take a 24-18 lead with 11:11 remaining in the half. Wesley Cardet, Jr., and Ques Glover had four points apiece during the run.
- The Bulldogs maintained a 27-23 advantage at the under 8:00 media timeout after making five of their last six shots from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers by Cooper Kaifes.
- Back-to-back 3-pointers by Jermaine Marshall and Jaron Rillie extended Samford's lead to 10, 37-27, with 5:06 remaining in the half.
- The Bulldogs closed out the first half with a pair of baskets by Marshall to take a 49-40 lead into the locker room.
- Kaifes led the Bulldogs with 12 points while Marshall and Cardet, Jr., added nine points apiece at the break. Felix Uadaile led the Scots and all scorers with 14 at the break.
- Samford connected on eight 3-pointers in the first half while shooting an 42.9 percent from the floor. Maryville shot 50 percent (16-of-32) but managed just 3-of-10 from 3-point range.
- The Bulldogs used a 9-0 run over the first 2:26 of the second half to build a 17-point lead, 60-43. Glover had five of the nine during the stretch.
- Jakobe Coleman's 3-pointer with 14:57 left in the second half sliced the Maryville deficit to 11, 63-52.
- Back-to-back 3-pointers by Tryon and Rillie extended Samford's lead back to 14, 61-57, at the 11:21 media timeout.
- At the under 8:00 media, Samford kept the lead at 16, 83-67.
- A driving lay-up by Glover with 6:54 to play gave the Bulldogs their largest lead of the night, 87-67.
- The Scots never got closer than 15 points over the remainder of the second half, as the Bulldogs closed out the season-opener with a 99-78 victory.
- Samford finished the night shooting 48.2 percent from the floor while connecting on 40 percent from 3-point range. Maryville closed the game shooting 49.2 percent and 38.9 percent from 3-point range.
STATS OF THE GAME:
- Glover, a transfer from Florida, led the Bulldogs with 19 points in his Samford debut.
- Kaifes finished the night making 5-of-10 from 3-point range to finish with 17 points.
- Tryon jump-started the season with a double-double, scoring 11 points while grabbing 12 boards.
- Cardet, Jr., was also in double digits, as the highly touted freshman scored 18 points.
- Jaden Campbell dropped in 10 points with seven rebounds and Marshall finished with 11 points and five boards to roud out the double digit scorers.
- The Bulldogs canned 14-of-35 from 3-point range as a team in the win.
- Samford outscored Maryville 24-10 in points off turnovers.
- The Bulldogs dominated the glass, out rebounding the Scots 41-26.

- Maryville entered Tuesday's game ranked No. 23 in the latest D3Hoops.com Top 25 Poll.
- It's been exactly 50 years since the Bulldogs and Scots last met on the hardwood, an 85-68 victory at the Western Carolina Classic in Cullowhee, N.C.
