Kuhns Collects 100th Career Win In 75-66 Victory Over Murray State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford University women's basketball team placed four Bulldogs (2-6) in double figures en route to a 75-66 victory over Murray State (6-2) on Saturday, Dec. 4 at the Pete Hanna Center. Shauntai Battle and Annie Ramil, who also had a career-high 16 rebounds, led the Bulldogs with 16 points each with Andrea Cournoyer adding 15 and Sanaa Redmond 10. Macey Turley led the Racers with 16 points.
 
Saturday's victory was also the 100th in Samford head coach Carley Kuhns' career. She is 100-60 in her six seasons as a head coach with three Southern Conference championships.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Samford led 7-4 at the 4:59 media timeout of the first quarter. The Bulldogs scored six of their seven inside the paint while holding the Racers to 2-of-8 from the field.
  • A layup by Annie Ramil and a pair of free throws from Shauntai Battle extended Samford's lead to 11-6 with 2:37 to play in the quarter.
  • Murray State used a 5-0 run to tie the game at 11-11 with 1:09 left in the first.
  • Mallory Hampton's floater in the lane with 50 seconds on the clock gave the Bulldogs the 13-11 lead at the end first quarter.
  • Both teams shot an identical 5-of-15 from the field for 33 percent in the first quarter.
  • After a missed 3-pointer by Murray State's Hannah McKay, Redmond canned a corner 3-pointer to go up five, 16-11, with 9:12 to play in the half.
  • The Bulldogs kept coming offensively, using a 10-0 run over 1:45 to take a 26-15 lead. Natalie Armstrong canned back-to-back 3-pointers at the top of the key to fuel the run and force the Racers to call a timeout.  
  • Macey Turley's jumper in the lane for the Racers ended Samford's 12-0 run and cut the deficit to 10, 28-18, with 4:28 remaining in the half.
  • Both teams went back and forth over the final 3:33 of the half, as the Bulldogs carried a 34-27 lead into the locker room.  
  • Murray State clawed back into the contest with a 10-4 run to start the third quarter. Samford answered with a pair of layups by Ramil and Kathleen Wheeler to push the lead back to seven, 44-37, at the 6:17 mark of the third.
  • Samford built the lead to 12 before Murray State reeled off eight straight points to slash the deficit to four, 49-45, with 1:48 to go in the quarter.
  • Cournoyer's 3-pointer from the right wing put the Bulldogs back up seven, 52-45, headed into the fourth quarter.
  • Burpo's back-to-back baskets knifed into the Samford lead before Ramil answered with a layup and free throw to push the lead to eight, 59-51.
  • Samford maintained a seven-point edge, 61-54, at the 4:33 media timeout.
  • Out of the timeout, a pair of free throws by Battle and a jumper from Cournoyer gave the Bulldogs an 11-point edge wit3:53 to play.
  • Murray State answered with a 3-pointer by McKay and two free throws from Turley, as Samford led 65-59 with 2:54 to go.
  • A turnover by the Bulldogs after a 3-pointer by Lex Mayes, led to a quick layup for Murray State by Turley to make it a five-point game with 1:14 left in the contest.
  • Samford iced the game at the free throw line over the final 41 seconds, nailing 6-of-6 to make the final margin nine, 75-66.                                  

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Samford ended the game shooting 43 percent (25-of-58) including 95 percent from the free throw line (18-of-19) in the win. Murray State shot 41 percent (26-of-63).
  • The Bulldogs also outrebounded the Racers 40-31.
  • Ramil tied her career-high with 16 rebounds, including nine offensive boards.       

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Samford and Murray State were meeting for the 11th time on Saturday in the series. The Racers lead the all-time series 6-5 after Saturday's loss to the Bulldogs.
  • Samford entered Saturday's showdown with Murray State averaging 58.0 points per game to rank seventh in the SoCon. The Bulldogs are also fifth in scoring defense at 68.3 points allowed per contest.
  • Saturday's victory was also the 100th in Samford head coach Carley Kuhns' career. She is 100-60 in her six seasons as a head coach with three Southern Conference championships.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Bulldogs continue their four-game homestand on Monday, Dec. 6, as Samford welcomes Talladega College to the Pete Hanna Center. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. Central and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
