BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off two wins against JSU last week, the Samford softball team will now take to the road to compete against Troy University in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 24 starting at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs will then turn around and host the Samford Tournament this weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. 

After locking in the two wins, the Bulldogs improve their record to 2-3 on the season. Troy currently sits at 8-1 after hosting back-to-back tournaments on its home turf. Northern Iowa has a record of 2-2 this season, while Louisiana-Monroe has a record of 1-1 after facing multiple cancellations due to weather.

BULLDOGS TO WATCH:

• Whitney Hinton hit her first home run of the season last week against JSU to tie the Samford softball program career home run record. Hinton has also recorded four runs, five hits, one double, and two RBIs so far this season.
• Timberlyn Shurbutt has played in all five games this season, earning three runs, four hits, two doubles, and five RBIs. She also slugged her first home run of the season in game two of the JSU doubleheader.
• Abby Swaney had an impressive performance in game one against the Gamecocks; pitching all 9.0 innings for the Bulldogs. Swaney struck out 11 batters, while only giving up four runs on four hits.

 
OPPONENT QUICK LOOKS:

• Troy has hosted two back-to-back tournaments this season, allowing the Trojans to have plenty of playing time before taking on the Bulldogs. In nine games total so far, Troy has recorded eight wins and one loss. That one loss was handed to them by Liberty University who defeated the Trojans 3-1.
• Troy has also competed against fellow Southern Conference schools, Mercer and Western Carolina, defeating the Bears 12-4 and 9-1, while locking in 9-1 and 4-0 wins against the Catamounts.
• Northern Iowa has a current record of 2-2 this season with wins against Butler University and Nebraska-Omaha, while suffering losses against Iowa State and South Dakota State. They will compete against Lipscomb in a doubleheader before the tournament.
• Louisiana-Monroe sits at 1-1 on the season with a 7-6 win over Jacksonville State and a loss against Louisiana Tech. The Warhawks are set to compete against Louisiana Tech, Eastern Illinois, and Southern before heading down to Birmingham, Alabama.
