SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford senior center
Natalie Armstrong was named the Southern Conference's Player of the Week when the league released its weekly women's basketball awards Monday morning.
Armstrong led Samford in its 74-65 win at Mercer that wrapped up the SoCon regular-season title Thursday night. She scored 24 points, making 11-of-16 shots from the floor, and was good on both of her free-throw attempts. She also had eight rebounds and one blocked shot in the victory.
For the season, Armstrong is averaging 13.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. The Norcross, Georgia native currently leads the Southern Conference in blocked shots per game, averaging 2.1 per contest.
This marks the sixth time this season a Samford player has been named SoCon Player of the Week. Others that have earned the honor are:
Shauntai Battle (Dec. 1),
Annie Ramil (Jan. 12 and Feb. 9) and
Andrea Cournoyer (Feb. 2 and Feb. 16).
Armstrong and the Bulldogs enter this week's Southern Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Bulldogs will open the tournament Thursday at 11 a.m. (CT) against the No. 8 seed, ETSU. The tournament is being held at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C.
