Women’s Basketball Eliminated From SoCon Tournament By ETSU, 68-61

ASHEVILLE, N.C. –
The top-seeded Samford women's basketball team was eliminated from the Southern Conference Tournament with a 68-61 loss to eighth-seeded ETSU in the quarterfinal round Thursday afternoon at Harrah's Cherokee Center.
 
Samford falls to 14-9 with the loss. ETSU improves to 4-15 and the Bucs advance to Friday's semifinal round.

  • Samford was led by Andrea Cournoyer with 31 points. Cournoyer's current 18.7 points-per-game average is the highest for a single-season in program history.
  • Natalie Armstrong scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
  • ETSU was led by Jakhiya Davis with 21 points and five rebounds.
  • As a team, Samford committed 21 turnovers in the loss.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • ETSU jumped out to an early 9-6 lead with 6:01 left in the first quarter following a layup by Davis.
  • The Bucs pushed their lead to 15-8 with 1:33 left in the first quarter after a pair of free throws by Kaia Upton.
  • ETSU held a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • With Samford trailing, 27-16, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 27-23 with 4:03 left in the second quarter after a pair of free throws by Cournoyer.
  • ETSU held a 32-27 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
  • In the third quarter Samford cut the lead to three points at 36-33 with 5:31 to go in the period after a free throw by Makaila Woolard.
  • ETSU pushed the lead back out to nine points at 49-40 with 1:15 to go in the third after a layup by E'lease Stafford.
  • The Bucs led, 49-43 at the end of the third quarter.
  • Early in the fourth quarter, Samford cut the lead to two points at 49-47 with 8:40 to go after a layup by Armstrong.
  • ETSU answered with an 8-2 run to push its lead to eight points at 57-49 with 4:07 left following a layup by Davis.
  • The Bucs pushed their lead to 11 points at 64-53 with 1:23 to go after a pair of free throws by Amaya Adams.
  • Samford could get no closer than seven points the rest of the way as ETSU came away with the 68-61 win.
