SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford second baseman
Brooks Carlson was named the Southern Conference's Player of the Month for baseball when the league released its Athlete of the Month awards recently.
Carlson led Samford with a .418 average, with nine doubles, five home runs and 25 RBI in 16 games in the month of May. He tallied at least one hit in 15 of the 16 games, and he had multiple hits in nine contests.
He had four hits in the team's first round SoCon Tournament win over Mercer, including a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. In three games in the SoCon Tournament, Carlson batted .500 (7-of-14) with two home runs, one double and six RBI.
Carlson earned Player of the Week honors on May 10 after having a huge week in a road series sweep at VMI. Carlson went on a hot streak over the last 22 games of the season. In that stretch, he is hitting .413 (38-of-92) with nine doubles, one triple, six home runs and 27 RBI.
For the season, Carlson finished third on the team with a .301 batting average with 13 doubles, six home runs and 37 RBI. For his career, Carlson has a .344 batting average with 50 doubles, 25 home runs and 144 RBI. His 50 doubles are tied for third in school history, just two shy of the school record.
Carlson and the Bulldogs posted a record of 35-24 overall and 20-10 in Southern Conference play this season. The team won the SoCon Tournament and earned a bid to the NCAA Starkville Regional, marking just the third NCAA Regional appearance in program history.
