HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs looked to bounce back against Clemson after a hard-fought match against the Aggies of North Carolina A&T Friday night. Tigers opened the match strong with a 3-0 run, building to their largest lead of eight points in the middle of the opening set. Samford went on a run of their own drawing within four following a marathon point ending with a big solo block from
Kayla Keshock forcing Clemson to call a timeout to regroup (15-19). Just as Clemson was trying to close out the first frame, the Bulldogs would not go away quietly, staving off two set points before the Tigers claimed the opening set 25-22.
The Dogs carried their momentum into set two jumping out to an early lead off a five-point run.
Sarah Hayes Farley had a trio of kills followed by a rocket shot from
Kate Wonus that forced Clemson into an early timeout. The Bulldogs continued to build their lead to a 10-3 advantage, but the Tigers were able to draw level at 13-13. The match continued back-and-forth until Clemson pulled ahead 24-21. Samford needed big time points, and
Sarah Hayes Farley obliged with two kills into the heart of the Tiger defense bringing the Dogs within one (23-24); however, Clemson would close out the second set 25-23.
The Dogs struggled to combat the Tigers serving in the third set, with Clemson going on a four-point run in the middle of the set to pull to a 17-8 advantage. The Bulldogs looked set for a mini run with back-to-back points from sophomore,
