Women’s Basketball To Host Furman Saturday Afternoon

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --
The Samford women's basketball team (7-11, 2-2 SoCon) will play host to the Furman Paladins (9-8, 2-1 SoCon) on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Blake Gardner (PBP), Emily London Swaim (Color) and Lindsey Cagle (sideline) calling the action.
 
  • Samford and Furman are meeting for the 31st time, with Samford owning a 17-13 series lead. The teams met twice last season, with Samford winning both matchups. The Bulldogs took the first game, 78-72, and the second contest by a score of 82-55. Both games were played in the Pete Hanna Center.
  • Samford last played on Jan. 20, when the Bulldogs fell at home to Wofford, 80-69. Sussy Ngulefac nearly posted a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. Andrea Cournoyer had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Natalie Armstrong had 10 points and nine rebounds, while Shauntai Battle also had 10 points for the Bulldogs.
  • Furman is coming off a 69-66 win at Mercer Thursday evening. In the win for the Paladins, Tierra Hodges had 26 points and 15 rebounds. Sydney James had 17 points for Furman, while Tate Walters added 15 points for the Paladins.
  • Furman is averaging 64.1 points per game entering Saturday afternoon's contest, while giving up 61.7 points per game.  
  • Furman is led in scoring by Tierra Hodges, averaging 17.0 points per game. Hodges is also averaging 11.8 rebounds per contest. Tate Walters is averaging 13.4 points per game.   
  • Andrea Cournoyer comes into Saturday afternoon's game leading the SoCon in scoring at 18.0 points per game while also leading in steals (3.0) per game and ranking fourth in free throw percentage (.840).
  • Samford is 4-4 at home so far this season. The Bulldogs have earned home-court wins over Montevallo, Murray State, Talladega College and UAB. Samford has fallen to Jacksonville State, Alabama A&M, Chattanooga and Wofford in the friendly confines of the Pete Hanna Center. 
  • The Bulldogs are 5-0 when scoring 75 or more points in a game so far this season.
  • Samford is averaging 62.7 points per game to rank third in the SoCon. The Bulldogs are also sixth in scoring defense at 68.9 points allowed per contest. 
  • Since joining the Southern Conference in 2008, Samford has posted a record of 133-86 in league games. Against the current members of the SoCon, Samford has an all-time record of 117-84. Samford's all-time record against each current SoCon  school is: Chattanooga (9-27), ETSU (9-7), Furman (17-13), Mercer (9-19), UNCG (22-7), Western Carolina (26-4) and Wofford (25-7).
  • Sanaa Redmond enters the week eighth in the league in assists at 2.7 per game. The freshman from Philadelphia, Pa., had a career-high nine assists in the Bulldogs' win over Montevallo.
  • The Bulldogs are shooting 40.7 percent from the floor to rank first in the SoCon. Samford has made 423-of-1039 attempts so far this season. Sussy Ngulefac leads the way shooting 65.3 percent. 
  • Shauntai Battle is averaging 7.9 points per game to rank 25th in the SoCon. She also ranks seventh in 3-point FG made per game (1.6) as well.  
  • Preseason All-SoCon selection and junior forward Annie Ramil has been a force on the boards, averaging 6.9 rebounds per game, ranking eighth in the league. She tied a career-high with 16 in the win at North Alabama.
  • Mallory Hampton is off to a good start this season, ranking 10th in the SoCon in assists per game (2.6).
  • As a team, Samford has done a good job of defending the three-point shot so far this season. The Bulldogs have limited their opponents to just 29.4 percent from beyond the arc, ranking third in the Southern Conference.
  • In two-plus seasons under head coach Carley Kuhns, Samford is 23-8 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs won a share of the SoCon regular season title in her first season with a 10-4 mark in conference play. Last season, she led the Bulldogs to an 11-2 record in Southern Conference record, winning the program's first outright SoCon regular season championship. So far this season, Samford is 2-2 in league contests.
  • Samford junior guard Andrea Cournoyer was named the SoCon Player of the Week on Tuesday. In two games last week, Cournoyer averaged 21.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

  • Following Saturday afternoon's home game against Furman, Samford will go back out on the road the following Saturday to play at Mercer on Jan. 29. The game is set for a 1:30 p.m. (CT) start from Macon, Ga.
