LEXINGTON, Va. – The Samford University soccer team grabbed an early lead and cruised to a 5-0 win at VMI Sunday afternoon at Patchin Field.
With the win, Samford improves to 6-3-4 overall and 2-1-1 in Southern Conference play. VMI falls to 1-10-2 overall and 0-3 in league action.
Samford got off to a quick start when
Ella Simpson scored off an assist from
Whitaker Buchanan in the seventh minute for a 1-0 Bulldog lead. In the 23
rd minute, Samford's
Layton Glisson scored off an assist from
Mary Raymond to give Samford a 2-0 advantage. The Bulldogs added a third first-half goal when
Kaitlin Maynard scored off an assist from
Taylor Yount in the 37
th minute for a 3-0 Samford lead.
The Bulldogs added to their lead with an own goal in the 47
th minute to make the score 4-0. Glisson netted her second goal of the game in the 75
th minute for a 5-0 Samford lead.
As a team, Samford outshot VMI, 29-2, including a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal. Samford had five corner kicks to just one for VMI. Glisson led Samford with six shots, followed by Yount with four. Samford goalkeeper
Emma Donley posted her first solo shutout, filling in for the injured
Morgan McAslan.
