BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After a solid performance during opening week, the Samford softball team turns its attention to Kennesaw State with the Bulldogs competing against the Owls in a four-game series with an away doubleheader on Friday and a home doubleheader on Sunday.
 
Samford posted an overall record of 3-2 this past weekend at the Black and Gold Invitational, hosted by the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. The Bulldogs dropped two on opening day, but bounced back with a 9-0 run-rule victory against Saint Louis and back-to-back wins over Southern Miss.
 
The Samford softball team will now travel to Kennesaw, Georgia for a Friday doubleheader against the Owls with the first pitch set for 4 p.m. at Bailey Park. Both teams will meet once again the following Sunday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. for another doubleheader at the Samford Softball Field. The Owls saw a 2-2 start to their season, finding wins against Loyola Chicago and Mercer at the Joanne Graf Classic down in Tallahassee, Florida. The Owls dropped two games to host school, Florida State, by final decisions of 4-0 and 11-0.

SERIES HISTORY:

• Samford and Kennesaw State have met a total of times 11 times with the Owls holding a 10-1 advantage in the series.
• The two teams last competed in the spring of 2017 with the Bulldogs falling the Owls by a final score of 9-1 at the Samford Softball Field.
• Samford's lone win against Kennesaw State came back in 2006 with the Bulldogs posting 6-2 victory at their home field in Birmingham.

 
BULLDOGS TO WATCH:

• Senior Timberlyn Shurbutt is coming off a stellar opening weekend with the Alexandria, Ala. native recording two doubles, a triple, a home run, and seven RBIs in five games. Her performance made a statement across the Southern Conference, earning her SoCon Player of the Week. Shurbutt started in all five contests, registering a .389 batting average after seven hits on 18 at-bats.
• Texas transfer, Mary Katherine Tedder, made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs, logging four hits and five runs in her 15 at-bats over the weekend. The shortstop drove in two runs against Saint Louis while smacking a grand slam in Samford's 6-0 shutout against Southern Miss.
