BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team (5-2, 0-0 SoCon) will play host to the Alabama State Hornets (3-5, 0-0 SWAC) Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. 
 

• Samford and Alabama State will be meeting for the 16th time, with Samford holding an 11-4 series lead. The teams met last week in Montgomery, with Samford pulling out a dramatic 6-5 win on a home run by Towns King in the top of the ninth inning.  

• Samford is set to start right-handed pitcher Brody Westbrooks (0-0, 1.42 ERA) on the mound Wednesday evening.

• Alabama State has yet to name a starter for Wednesday evening's contest.

• The Hornets will play Tuesday evening at Auburn before travelling to Birmingham for Wednesday's contest.

• Samford enters the week with a mark of 5-2. The Bulldogs swept Arkansas State to open the season. Samford then earned a dramatic, 6-5 win at Alabama State last week, before winning one of three games at 10th-ranked Florida State over the weekend.

• Alabama State is currently 3-5 on the young season. The Hornets won two-of-three games from UT Martin over the weekend. 

• Samford outfielder Colton Ledbetter had a big game in Samford's 7-4, 10-inning win at Florida State Sunday. He belted two homers and drove in three runs in leading Samford to the win.

• Infielder Garrett Howe currently leads Samford with a .370 batting average.

• Alabama State has been led by Corey King with a .414 average with two doubles, a triple, a home run and eight RBI.

• Samford is 1-0 so far this season against in-state teams, with a 6-5 win at Alabama State last Tuesday. The Bulldogs have 12 games on the 2022 schedule against in-state teams, playing two games each against Alabama State, Alabama, Auburn, Jacksonville State, Troy and UAB.

• Samford will play a three-game series at Charleston Southern this weekend. The teams are set to play Friday at 4 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 12:30 p.m. (CT) and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT) in Charleston, S.C.
