Baseball To Host Memphis This Weekend, Friday Game Moved To 1 p.m.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford University baseball team (7-4) will play host to Memphis in a three-game series this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 1 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.  Friday's game was moved up to 1 p.m. due to the threat of inclement weather in the Birmingham area. All three games can be seen live on ESPN+. 
 
  • Samford is set to start right-handed pitcher Jacob Cravey (0-2, 5.25 ERA) on Friday, left-handed pitcher Blake Bortak (0-2, 6.39 ERA) on Saturday and right-hander Jalon Long (2-0, 1.23 ERA) on Sunday.
  • Memphis is scheduled to start RHP Connor Shamblin (2-0, 2.12 ERA), LHP Dalton Fowler (0-1, 6.75 ERA), and RHP Landon Gartman (1-0, 2.70 ERA) on the mound.
  • Samford and Memphis have met seven previous times, with Samford holding a 4-3 series lead.  The last meeting in the series came in 2015, with Samford earning an 8-4 win at Memphis.
  • Samford enters the weekend with a mark of 7-4. The Bulldogs are coming off dropping two-of-three games at Charleston Southern over the weekend. Samford won game three, 9-4, after dropping the first two games by scores of 16-4 and 9-4.
  • Memphis is currently 6-4 on the young season. The Tigers dropped two-of-three to Nicholls State over the weekend. Memphis lost the first two games (14-8 and 14-9) and won game three (9-6).
  • Samford has made a habit of winning close games so far this season. The Bulldogs are 4-0 in games decided by three runs or less.
  • Towns King currently leads Samford with a .381 batting average, three doubles, one triple, four home runs and 13 RBI. He also has an impressive .786 slugging percentage.
  • Memphis has been led by Jacob Compton, batting .375 with five doubles, one home run and eight RBI.
  • Entering this weekend, Samford leads the Southern Conference in fielding. The Bulldogs currently have a .983 team fielding percentage.
  • Towns King is currently tied for third in the SoCon in home runs (4) and he ranks fourth in the league in total bases with 33.
