BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford head football coach
Chris Hatcher announced several changes to his coaching staff for the upcoming season on Thursday.
Seven new members have been added to the staff, with
Chris Boone (Defensive Coordinator/Safeties),
Brandon Cooper (Linebackers),
Mike Krysl (Special Teams Coordinator/Tight Ends),
Terrance Malone (Outside Linebackers),
Darien Moody (Defensive Line),
Lewis Freeman (Director of Football Operations) and
Connor Koch (Director of Player Personnel) joining the full-time staff. Additionally,
Ricky Turner has been promoted to assistant head coach/offensive coordinator and
Shawn Bostick has been elevated to associate head coach/offensive line.
K.D. Humphries has been promoted and will now take over coaching the team's running backs.
"We are excited about the additions that we have made to our staff this offseason," Hatcher said. "They are an experienced group that I believe will help us continue to improve in our pursuit of being the ultimate team this fall. They have done a great job thus far in spring practice and I am looking forward to having our players continue to learn from their expertise."
This is Boone's second stint on the Samford coaching staff, having served as the program's defensive line coach in 2014. After leaving Samford, he was the assistant head coach/defensive coordinator at Murray State (2015-2018), defensive line and safeties coach at Southern Mississippi (2018-2020) and defensive coordinator at East Mississippi Community College (2021). Boone brings with him a vast amount of coaching experience at the collegiate level. Boone has served stints as the defensive coordinator at Northwestern State (2013-2014), Jacksonville State (2011-2012), UT Martin (2006-2010) and East Central Community College (2004-2006). He also spent time on the staffs of Nicholls State (2002-2004), Arkansas-Monticello (2000-2002), UAB (1999-2000) Pearl River Community College (1997-1998) and Southern Mississippi (1996-1997).
Cooper comes to Samford after working as the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at UNC Charlotte for the last three seasons. Previously he was the defensive coordinator at Austin Peay from 2016 to 2018. He also served on the staffs of Murray State (2015-2016), Chattanooga (2013-2015), Jacksonville State (2011-2012) and UT Martin (2007-2011).
Krysl is also entering his second stint on the staff at Samford. He previously coordinated Samford's special teams during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Since leaving Samford, Krysl has coordinated the special teams for Army (2018-2019) and Arkansas (2020-2021). Krysl began his coaching career as an offensive assistant at Central Missouri in 2010 and 2011, and later worked with the special teams at Georgia Southern from 2014 to 2015.
Malone comes to Samford after working as a graduate assistant working with the defensive backs and strength and conditioning at East Mississippi Community College in 2021. He also served as a graduate assistant working with defensive backs at Murray State in 2016.
Moody arrives at Samford from Alcorn State where he coached defensive ends for the last two seasons. He also served as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Mississippi Valley State in 2019. Moody started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Alcorn State (2017) and Southern Mississippi (2018).
Humphries is in his third year on the staff and has worked with the quarterbacks the last two seasons. Prior to coming to Samford, Humphries spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as the running backs coach at Murray State.
Freeman, who was a long-snapper on the Samford football team from 2015 to 2019, comes to Samford after serving as an operations intern for the University of Georgia football team during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Koch played football at both TCU and Samford. During the 2021 season, he served the Samford staff as a player personnel and recruiting assistant. He has worked as the interim director of football operations since October.
