Baseball To Play At Cross-Town Rival UAB Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford University baseball team (7-4) will play at cross-town rival UAB (8-3) Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Young Memorial Field. The game can be seen live on CUSA TV. 
 
  • Samford is set to start right-handed pitcher Brody Westbrooks (0-0, 5.27 ERA) on the mound Tuesday afternoon.
  • Samford and UAB have met 90 previous times, with UAB holding a 58-32 series lead. In the last 10 meetings, Samford is 7-3 against the Blazers.
  • This is the first year for both head coaches Tony David (Samford) and Casey Dunn (UAB) in their current positions. Dunn spent the last 17 seasons as the head coach at Samford, and David was the program's associate head coach during that time.
  • Samford enters the week with a mark of 7-4. The Bulldogs are coming off dropping two-of-three games at Charleston Southern over the weekend. Samford won game three, 9-4, after dropping the first two games by scores of 16-4 and 9-4.
  • UAB is currently 8-3 on the season. The Blazers won two-of-three games from Alabama A&M last weekend. UAB won game one (12-5), dropped game two (11-9) and won the third game (12-1 in seven innings).
  • Samford has made a habit of winning close games so far this season. The Bulldogs are 4-0 in games decided by three runs or less.
  • Towns King currently leads Samford with a .381 batting average, three doubles, one triple, four home runs and 13 RBI. He also has an impressive .786 slugging percentage.
  • Garrett Howe is batting .326 with two doubles, one triple, one home run and seven RBI.
  • UAB has been led so far at the plate by Caleb Floyd, batting .457 with four doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI.
  • Entering this week, Samford leads the Southern Conference in fielding. The Bulldogs currently have a .983 team fielding percentage.
  • Towns King is currently tied for third in the SoCon in home runs (4) and he ranks fourth in the league in total bases with 33.

  • Samford will host Memphis in a three-game series at Joe Lee Griffin Field this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
