Bulldogs Welcome UAB For Midweek Matchup

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After closing out its time in Oxford, the Samford softball team will now turn its attention to crosstown rival, UAB, for a midweek matchup at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 8 at the Samford Softball Field.
 
The Bulldogs are coming off a 2-3 record from the Ole Miss Classic after finding both their wins against Saint Louis. Samford defeated the Billikens in game one with a 6-0 shutout prior to a 6-5 victory on day two of the tournament. Western Kentucky captured 4-0 and 8-3 victories over the Bulldogs before Ole Miss edged Samford 2-0 in a single game on day three to close out the weekend.
 
UAB enters Tuesday's action with overall record of 12-9, while the Bulldogs currently sit at 10-9 on their season. Samford holds a team batting average of .274, recording 144 hits in 526 at-bats to go along with 73 runs, 61 RBIs, 22 doubles, and 10 home runs. The Bulldogs rank first in the Southern Conference in hits and total plate appearances, while coming in at the third spot in batting average, doubles, and total bases.

SERIES HISTORY:
  • The crosstown rivals are no strangers to each other, competing 37 times over the years with the Blazers holding a 31-6-0 series advantage.
  • The two teams met twice last season with UAB capturing 2-0 and 4-2 wins over the Bulldogs. Samford's last win over the Blazers came back in the spring of 2016 where the Bulldogs posted a 6-1 victory over UAB.  
BULLDOGS TO WATCH:
  • Mary Katherine Tedder led Samford offensively this past weekend, registering three runs after knocking eight hits in her 16 plate appearances at the Ole Miss Classic. The Hoover, Ala., native also drove in five runs while blasting her fourth home run on the season in Samford's second game against Western Kentucky.
  • Gwynnie Hornibrook is playing more of a role in Samford's lineup at the designated hitter spot with the freshman starting in all five competitions in Oxford. Hornibrook posted a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game one against Saint Louis, smacking her first career home run against the Billikens as well.
