Bulldogs To Compete At JSU Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team will close out its tournament slate for the 2022 season this Thursday and Friday at the JSU Invitational where the Bulldogs will face Jacksonville State and Austin Peay.
 
The Bulldogs are set to compete in four games over the two-day period, Mar. 10-11, at University Field. Day one will consist of Samford taking on Austin Peay with a 1 p.m. first pitch prior to a 3:30 p.m. matchup against Jacksonville State. The following day, Samford will open competition against the Governors at 12 p.m. before facing the Gamecocks once again at 5 p.m.
 
Jacksonville State enters the tournament with an overall record of 10-8 and Austin Peay at 12-7, while the Bulldogs currently sit at 10-9 on their season. Samford holds a team batting average of .274, recording 144 hits in 526 at-bats to go along with 73 runs, 61 RBIs, 22 doubles, and 10 home runs. The Bulldogs rank first in the Southern Conference in hits ad total plate appearances, while coming in at the third spot in batting average, doubles, and total bases.

SERIES HISTORY:
  • Samford and Austin Peay have met a total of 44 times with the Bulldogs formally competing in the OVC prior to their departure in 2008. Samford holds a series advantage of 29-15 over the Governors, lasting competing in 2018 where the Bulldogs captured an 8-4 victory.
  • In-state rivals, Jacksonville State and Samford, have taken the field together 66 times with the Gamecocks holding a 42-24 series advantage. The two teams competed three times last season with the Bulldogs securing wins in every contest.
 
BULLDOGS TO WATCH:
  • Mary Katherine Tedder lead Samford offensively this past weekend, registering three runs after knocking eight hits in her 16 plate appearances at the Ole Miss Classic. The Hoover, Ala., native also drove in five runs while blasting her fourth home run on the season in Samford's second game against Western Kentucky.
  • Gwynnie Hornibrook is playing more of a role in Samford's lineup at the designated hitter spot with the freshman starting in all five competitions in Oxford. Hornibrook posted a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game one against Saint Louis, smacking her first career home run against the Billikens.
