Baseball Welcomes #22 Wofford For Weekend SoCon Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford University baseball team (18-20, 5-4 SoCon) will play host to the 22nd-ranked Wofford Terriers (30-11, 8-1 SoCon) in a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Admission to all three games is free. The first two games can be seen live on ESPN+.
 
  • Samford enters the week with a mark of 18-20 overall and 5-4 in the Southern Conference. Last weekend, the Bulldogs dropped two-of-three games at UNC Greensboro. In a midweek contest this week, Samford fell to Alabama, 9-3, Tuesday evening. 
  • Wofford has a record of 30-11 overall and 8-1 in SoCon play. The Terriers fell at Clemson, 17-4 Wednesday night. The Terriers won two-of-three from Mercer last weekend. 
  • Samford is scheduled to start right-handed pitcher Jacob Cravey (1-3, 4.59 ERA) Friday, right-hander Michael Ross (3-1, 4.50 ERA) Saturday and righty Jalon Long (2-4, 5.83 ERA) Sunday.
  • Wofford is slated to start right-handed pitcher Matthew Marchal (4-2, 2.74 ERA) Friday and right-hander Josh Vitus (4-3, 2.88 ERA) Saturday. Wofford has not named a starter yet for Sunday's contest.
  • Samford and Wofford have met 38 previous times, with Samford holding a 21-17 lead. Last season, the teams met in a series in Spartanburg, with Wofford winning two-of-three games. Samford won the first game, 9-8, but Wofford came back to win the last two games, 7-5 and 7-6. 
  • Entering this weekend, Samford leads the Southern Conference in fielding percentage at .973.
  • Stephen Klein currently leads Samford in batting with a .356 average to go along with his seven doubles, four home runs and 26 RBI. Colton Ledbetter leads the team in home runs with 10 and in RBI with 31.
  • Over the last four games, Maurice Hampton has hit .500 (8-of-16) with three home runs, one double and four RBI. His best game in the stretch came last Saturday at UNC Greensboro when he went 4-for-5 with two home runs and two RBI. He also homered in Tuesday night's game against Alabama.
  • Wofford is led at the plate by Brenned Dorighi, batting .358 with five home runs and 37 RBI. Jack Renwick leads the Terriers in RBI with 39.
  • Samford players rank in the top five in the Southern Conference in several different statistical categories entering this weekend. Stephen Klein ranks third in on-base percentage (.468) and tied for first in hit-by-pitch (12). Colton Ledbetter is tied for fourth in home runs (10). Maurice Hampton is tied for fifth in the league in stolen bases (12). Carson Hobbs ranks second in the SoCon in saves (7) and games finished (13). Michael Ross ranks third in the league in fewest hits allowed (38), and he leads the league in fewest doubles allowed (4). Jacob Cravey is tied for fifth in fewest home runs allowed (3).

  • Samford will play host to in-state rival Troy on Tuesday, May 3, at 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Admission to the game is free.
