Bulldogs Welcome VMI For SoCon-Opening Series This Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford University baseball team (13-13, 0-0 SoCon) will host the VMI Keydets (9-21, 0-0 SoCon) in the Southern Conference opening series for both teams this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games can be seen live on ESPN+.
 
  • Samford is scheduled to start right-handers Jacob Cravey (0-2, 3.79 ERA) Friday, Michael Ross (2-0, 4.10 ERA) Saturday and Jalon Long (2-2, 7.42 ERA) Sunday on the mound.
  • VMI is slated to start left-handed pitcher Trey Morgan (0-1, 9.31 ERA) Friday and right-hander Tyler Bradt (3-3, 5.97 ERA) Saturday. VMI has not named a Sunday starter yet.
  • Samford and VMI have met 28 previous times, with Samford owning a 22-6 series lead. The teams played six times last year, with Samford sweeping a three-game series at Joe Lee Griffin Field and another three-game series in Lexington, Va.
  • Entering this weekend, Samford ranks second in the Southern Conference in fielding. The Bulldogs currently have a .970 team fielding percentage.
  • Samford enters the week with a mark of 13-13. The Bulldogs dropped two of three games to Missouri State last weekend, the team is coming off a 10-1 loss at Alabama in a Tuesday evening contest.
  • VMI has a record of 9-21. The Keydets were swept in a series by UNC Wilmington over the weekend and won a midweek game against VCU and dropped one to James Madison.  
  • Samford has made a habit of winning close games so far this season. The Bulldogs are 8-2 in games decided by three runs or less.
  • Stephen Klein leads Samford with a .347 average, six doubles, three home runs and 18 RBI. Towns King is hitting .322 with seven doubles, six home runs and 20 RBI.
  • VMI is led offensively by Justin Starke, batting .394 with seven doubles, nine home runs and 22 RBI.
  • Since joining the Southern Conference for the 2009 season, Samford has posted a record of 182-142 record in league games. Last season, Samford went 20-10 in league games.
