Baseball Steps Out Of Conference Play To Host Troy Tuesday Evening

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford University baseball team (20-21, 7-5 SoCon) will play host to in-state rival Troy (28-14, 13-8 Sun Belt) in a non-conference game Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Admission to the game is free, and the contest can be seen live on ESPN+.
 
  • Samford enters the week with a mark of 20-21 overall and 7-5 in the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs won two-of-three games over No. 22 Wofford over the weekend. Samford won the first two games, 5-4 and 11-3 and dropped game three, 16-6. 
  • Troy has a record of 28-14 overall and 13-8 in Sun Belt Conference play. The Trojans swept a three-game series from Georgia State over the weekend, winning the games by scores of 10-1, 4-3 and 3-2.
  • Samford is scheduled to start right-handed pitcher Will Lynch in Tuesday evening's contest. Lynch has a record of 0-4 and an ERA of 11.44.
  • Troy is slated to start right-handed pitcher Bay Witcher. Entering the week, Witcher has posted a record of 3-2 and an ERA of 5.95.
  • Samford and Troy have met 70 previous times, with Troy holding a 44-26 series lead. Last season, Samford won both meetings, taking the game in Troy, 6-5 and then the game in Birmingham by a score of 4-3. 
  • Entering this week, Samford ranks second in the Southern Conference in fielding percentage at .972.
  • Stephen Klein currently leads Samford in batting with a .363 average to go along with his seven doubles, five home runs and 30 RBI. Colton Ledbetter leads the team in home runs with 10 and in RBI with 32.
  • Will David had an impressive week last week in leading Samford to a series win over 22nd-ranked Wofford. He had two hits in each of the three games, including a double, a home run and three RBI.
  • Troy is led at the plate by Donovan Whibbs with a .319 average, eight doubles, one home run and 26 RBI. Easton Kirk leads the team in home runs with seven and Jesse Hall is the team leader in RBI with 35.
  • Samford players rank in the top five in the Southern Conference in several statistical categories entering this week.  Stephen Klein ranks fourth in the league in on-base percentage (.464) and is tied for first in hit-by-pitches (12). Maurice Hampton ranks fifth in the SoCon in stolen bases (13). Carson Hobbs ranks second in the league in saves (8) and in games finished (14). Jacob Cravey and Jalon Long are both tied for fifth in games started (11).

  • Samford will host ETSU in a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to all three games is free.
