SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the third time in the last four weeks, Samford freshman pitcher
McKenzie Newcomb was named the Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week when the league released its weekly softball awards Monday afternoon.
Newcomb allowed just one run in 9.1 innings in earning a pair of wins in Samford's series sweep at ETSU over the weekend. She tossed the complete game, giving up just one run and striking out nine batters while allowing just one walk in the 3-1 win in game one of the series. In the second contest, she pitched 2.1 innings in relief, adding a 10th strikeout for the week, in a 7-3, eight-inning win. In that game, she gave up no runs on just one hit.
For the season, Newcomb ranks second in the Southern Conference in wins with a 20-7 record. She also leads the league with an impressive 1.48 ERA, and she is second in the league on batters struck out with 144.
Samford will host UNC Greensboro in a pivotal weekend Southern Conference series, with the winner of the series taking the SoCon regular-season title. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
