Samford Football Travels To Furman For SoCon Showdown

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the third time in four weeks, the No. 16 Samford football team will hit the road to travel to the Furman Paladins for the second game of Southern Conference play.
 
The SoCon showdown is slated for 1 p.m. CT in Greenville, S.C. and can be streamed on ESPN+ with Bob Mihalic and Faxon Childress on the call.

Samford is coming off a 35-12 dismantling of Western Carolina in the Bulldogs' conference opener on Family Weekend at Seibert Stadium. Michael Hiers and Isaiah Richardson were named SoCon Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for their efforts against the Catamounts. 
 
The Bulldogs and the Paladins are meeting for the 25th time on the gridiron with Furman holding a slight 13-11 advantage. Despite Furman winning the last three meetings, the series is tied at five over the last 10 matchups.
 
Hiers, Richardson Wins POTW
Following the dub over Western Carolina, Michael Hiers and Isaiah Richardson were named SoCon Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. Hiers tossed four touchdown passes, while Richardson led the Bulldog D in tackles and had a tone-setting end zone pick in the first quarter.
 
Hatcher Climbing The Winning Charts
Following the victory over Western Carolina, head coach Chris Hatcher improved his record to 43-36 at Samford. Hatcher currently has the third most wins by a Samford HC and four back of Pat Sullivan (47) for most wins by a coach in program history.
 
Hiers, Smith Top 10 Nationally
The high-flying aerial act of Michael Hiers and Chandler Smith has paid early dividends this season. Smith is tied for second in the nation with six receiving touchdowns, while Hiers ranks sixth nationally with 12 passing touchdowns.
 
Putting Up Points
Over the last eight seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher, the Samford offense has scored at least 30 points 44 times. The unit has put up at least 40 points 25 times, and at least 50 points a total of 11 times.
 
Quick Strikes
In eight seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher, Samford has made a habit of quick scoring drives. In Hatcher's time at Samford, Samford has had 170 scoring drives of two minutes or less and 71 that have lasted one minute or less. 
 
Samford against South Carolina Teams
Samford has an all-time record of 41-29-1 against teams from the state of South Carolina, including a mark of 11-13 against Saturday's opponent, Furman.
 
Against Southern Conference Teams
Since joining the Southern Conference in 2008, Samford has posted a record of 60-50 in conference games. All time against each current members of the SoCon, Samford has a mark of 86-80-4, including an 11-13 record against Furman. Samford's all-time record against each current SoCon team is: Chattanooga (10-33-3), The
Citadel (8-7), ETSU (6-3), Furman (11-13), Mercer (14-13-1), VMI (6-3), Western Carolina (17-3) and Wofford (14-5).
 
On This Date 
Samford has an all-time record of 7-5-1 in games played on Oct 1. The last time the Bulldogs played a game on the date was in 2016, a 28-26 win over Wofford. The last time Samford played hit the road for the first day of October was an 18-17 win at Morehead State in 1988.
