Women’s Basketball Travels To ETSU For Saturday SoCon Showdown

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Looking to stay atop the Southern Conference standings, the Samford women's basketball team heads to Johnson City for a SoCon Saturday contest with the Buccaneers of ETSU on Jan. 14.

The matchup between Samford and ETSU is scheduled for a noon CT tipoff and the game can be streamed on ESPN+. Samford game notes can be found here

Samford enters the weekend with a 9-9 overall record and a perfect 3-0 record in SoCon play after grinding out a 58-53 win on Thursday night at Chattanooga. Despite being 0-2 in the early going of SoCon, ETSU enters the contest with a 13-5 overall record.

The Bulldogs and the Buccaneers are meeting for the 19th time in program history with Samford holding a 10-8 record in the all-time series. In the last meeting, Annie Ramil scored 12 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in her eighth career double-double in a 73-61 Bulldog victory on Feb. 7, 2022.

In the first 18 games of the season, Samford coach Carley Kuhns has started the lineup of Andrea BaileySussy NgulefacKathleen WheelerAlyssa Tarpley and Sanaa Redmond.

On the heels of her second SoCon Player of the Week award this season, Bailey is averaging 17.9 points per game, which is good enough to rank 50th nationally and first in the SoCon. The senior also ranks Top 25 nationally in field goal attempts (15th/254), made field goals (21st/119), points (22nd/323), steals (11th/48) and steals per game (20th/2.89).

Redshirt freshman Carly Heidger has been the impactful Bulldog off the bench this season appearing in all but one game. Heidger leads all Bulldog reserves by 5.9 points per game. Since the start of conference play, the forward is averaging 10.3 points per game with 4.7 rebounds.

Since the Northern Colorado game, redshirt freshman Emily Bowman has started to come into her own by averaging 7.8 points per game and pulling down 28 rebounds which ranks second on the team.

Since arriving on campus before the 2019-20 season, coach Kuhns and the Bulldogs are 31-13 in SoCon play overall and 17-3 against SoCon opponents at home.

With a win, Samford would start league play 4-0 for the second time since joining the SoCon in 2008, both times having been in the Kuhns era. The win would also push the Bulldogs winning streak to five games, which would be the second longest in the Kuhns era.
