Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Clips Catamounts for Eighth-Straight Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Men's Basketball Team picked up its eighth-straight victory with a 74-65 defeat of Western Carolina on Saturday evening in the Pete Hanna Center.

The win bolsters the Bulldogs to 14-7 overall and 8-0 in Southern Conference play, improving on their best start to open SoCon action since joining the league in 2008. Western Carolina falls to 11-10 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

The winning streak marks the longest for Samford since the 1998-99 season when they won 13-straight contests to open play in the former TAAC (ASUN) .

In his first game back since Nov. 30, junior guard Ques Glover scored a game-high 20 points on a 6-10 shooting night. Glover hauled in three rebounds and shot 8-9 from the free-throw line in 25 minutes of work.

Jermaine Marshall logged his second-straight double-double and fourth in SoCon play this season with a 14-point, 12-rebound effort. Bubba Parham (12) and Logan Dye (11) both also scored in double figures, with Dye hauling in five boards.

A three-pointer by Parham put Samford up 7-6 at the 15:15 mark in the first. A few possessions later, Glover found the bottom of the net on his first shot back, a 15-foot mid-range jumper to give the Bulldogs a 9-6 advantage. Glover finished the half with a team-high seven points in 12 minutes played.

A three from Tre Jackson gave the Catamounts a 21-19 lead at the 4:06 mark, but Samford took back control of the game by outscoring Western Carolina 11-5 over the remainder of the half to take a 32-24 lead into the break.

Western Carolina closed the gap by outscoring Samford 10-2 to begin the second half, with a three-ball by Russell Jones Jr. tying the game at 34 with 15:18 to play.

The Bulldogs turned up the intensity down the stretch and pulled away from WCU by rattling off a 15-1 run over five minutes. A layup by Glover at the 13:27 mark tied the game and ignited the run, and was followed by the Bulldogs scoring 13 of the game's next 14 points to take a 53-41 lead with 8:20 to play.

Samford kept its foot on the gas the rest of the way, growing its lead to 16 after a pair of free throws by Parham put them up 72-56 with 1:46 to go before giving way to the 74-65 final score.

"It feels good," Glover said about returning to court on the night. "I'm proud of my teammates. I was out for six weeks, and the guys battled. They kept working, kept pushing, and we started off conference really strong. I want to thank my teammates for believing in me, and my coaches for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to go out there and play like I play. Seeing them play so well without me was so peaceful. I enjoyed being on the bench and watching those guys play at such a high level."

The Bulldogs shot 50 percent (13-26) from the floor in the second half to finish the evening shooting 41 percent (23-56). Samford out-rebounded Western Carolina 36-30 while accumulating 37 bench points and 28 points in the paint.

The Bulldogs shot a season-high 92 percent (22-24) from the free throw line in the win, with Dye, Marshall, and Parham all shooting 100 percent from the line on the night.

The men's basketball team will hit the road for its next three games, beginning with a Wednesday, Jan. 25 showdown at Furman at 6:00 p.m. (CST).
